Fundamentals of Noise and Vibration

Overview

Noise is a ubiquitous industrial pollutant whose impact on urban and in rural society worldwide is considerable. Noise and vibration are now major factors in determining the marketability and competitiveness of a wide range of manufacturers' products from washing machines to cars and aircraft. Controlling noise and vibration effectively at source demands highly-skilled engineers. Concerns about the effects of noise and vibration on the human environment have led to the formulation of exposure standards for environmental noise and vibration and there is a need for specialists with detailed understanding of the environmental and human effects of noise and vibration, as well as for legislators and administrators with a basic understanding of acoustics. Fundamentals of Noise and Vibration is based on the first semester of the postgraduate Masters' course in Sound and Vibration Studies at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, at the University of Southampton. The main objective of the course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to practise in the field of noise and vibration control technology. Readers do not need prior formal training in acoustics although a basic understanding of mechanics, fluid dynamics and applied mathematics is required. Many of the chapters use examples of models and forms of analysis to illustrate the principles that they introduce. By pointing toward the practical application of these fundamental principles and methods, the book will benefit those wishing to extend their knowledge and understanding of acoustic and vibration technology for professional purposes. A companion volume, Advanced Topics in Noise and Vibration will follow.

Reviews

'The list of contributing authors reads like a veritable Who's Who' of UK acoustics.' - Acoustics Bulletin 'This represents an excellent introductory text book on noise and vibration for a postgraduate student or a specialist engineer with little or no previous acoustic knowledge.' - Acoustics Bulletin The book is also an excellent starting point for engineers seeking to acquaint themselves with these fields as well as a valuable reference for practising scientists. This is not only interesting reading; it is a useful reference for those working in or planning to work in the field of practical acoustics. - Acustica
