OverviewThis textbook on term and late preterm infants provides information that is fundamental to working in a newborn nursery. The book begins with a chapter on conception, embryogenesis, fetal development and behavior. Chapter 2 focuses on obstetrical events and concludes with a discussion on the newborn's post-birth adaptation and resuscitation. Admission procedures and notations that are standard in nurseries are included in Chapter 3. The newborn history and physical examination are detailed in Chapter 4. The subsequent six chapters describe normal and problematic findings in six anatomical sites. Eleven systemic disorders that are encountered frequently in newborns, e.g., blood group incompatibilities, bilirubin disturbances, hypoglycemia, etc., are discussed in Chapter 11. Information on drug withdrawal is included in this chapter. Chapter 12 is about a subset of preterm infants, who are often admitted to newborn nurseries. Late Preterm Infants (LPIs) resemble their more mature peers but their behavior confirms their immaturity. Chapter 13 discusses nutrition with an emphasis on breast feeding. The final chapter outlines discharge preparations and follow up plans. There are references to books, journals and periodicals, plus web sites. Photographs and illustrations are intended to clarify discussions in the text. Key words and phrases are italicized and defined in a Glossary. Scattered throughout the book are clinical pearls, tidbits of information which have been accumulated over forty years of practice.
