OverviewThe papers in this volume were presented at the 23rd UWM Linguistics Symposium, held at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in April 1996, and concentrate on syntax, phonology and first language acquisition from the functionalist and formalist perspectives. Topics in syntax include: the functionalism-formalism dichotomy; attributes of structuralist syntax; constructs of formalist syntax; word order; and ergativity. Papers on phonology describe how usage-based functionalism can reveal ways in which language use shapes structure and discuss how both functionalists and formalists can draw from each other's work in phonology.
