Titanic was built because of competition. Cunard, a ship building company, launched the two fastest passenger ships in the world in 1907. They were Mauritania and the Lusitania. The White Star Line, Cunard's rival ship building company, wanted to outdo these two new ships. Instead of focusing on speed, White Star Line would focus on luxury. The White Star Line created the Olympic class passenger ship. It hired Harland & Wolf, it is favored shipbuilder to build the Olympic class ships.
