Fruhmittelalterliche Glossen: Ein Beitrag Zur Funktionalitat Und Kontextualitat Mittelalterlicher Schriftlichkeit

Overview

English summary: This work allows for a deeper view into the forms, functions and contexts of early medieval glosses, which previously was often possible within edited works or monographs with limited or specific scholarly interests. It brings together the results of functionally oriented individual studies and closes in on the often contested general impression about medieval glosses and, at the same time, develops a heuristic approach to the functional analysis of glosses from the perspective of functional-pragmatic textual linguistics. The various contexts in which glosses can be found were used to create a broad base of sources from monastic education, libraries, private studies, situations of recitation and the scriptorium. Finally, the model developed in this study is applied to a thick commentary on the Gospels: ""Archive of the Bishopric of Augsburg, Hs. 6."" Some glosses appear in the cryptographic system, the so-called the ""Neumengeheimschrift""; next to the new edition of these glosses, this works provides a fundamental new undertaking of this rare writing system.
