From Woodstock to Wisdom: A Boomer's Journey to 80

Overview

From Woodstock to Wisdom From tie-dye and protest marches to Medicare cards and grandparenting apps, Baby Boomers have lived through more change than any generation in history-and somehow, we're still standing. From Woodstock to Wisdom is the story of what it means to be one of the first Boomers to turn 80... and how to do it with humor, grit, grace, and a very good sense of irony. Vicki Thomas-award-winning purpose advocate and Encore.org Purpose Prize winner-invites readers into a deeply personal, wildly relatable journey through eight decades of life, love, reinvention, and resilience. With laugh-out-loud stories, honest reflections, and hard-earned wisdom, she captures how her generation went from ""don't trust anyone over 30"" to redefining what it means to live vibrantly well past 70. This isn't just another memoir-it's a field guide for aging boldly. Organized into short, ""snackable"" chapters, the book explores love, loss, legacy, technology, freedom of speech, and the ever-evolving search for purpose in the final quarter of life. Along the way, Thomas weaves together cultural touchstones-Woodstock, Watergate, Wi-Fi, and yes, even walkers while asking big, meaningful questions about community, responsibility, and what we owe the generations coming up behind us. Whether you're 50, 70, 80-or just curious about what comes next-From Woodstock to Wisdom will make you laugh, nod, and maybe even rethink how you want to live the rest of your story. Inside you'll discover: - How to turn wrinkles, regrets, and ""what-ifs"" into wisdom, laughter, and surprisingly good stories - Why your past (yes, even the messy parts) is actually your greatest superpower - How to navigate love, loss, friendship, and family when everyone seems to be aging at the same time - What it really means to leave a legacy-without needing a trust fund or a statue - How to stay relevant, curious, and connected in a world of smartphones, social media, and AI - Why purpose doesn't retire when you do-and may actually get better with age - How to let go of what no longer serves you (including grudges, clutter, and uncomfortable shoes) - Ways to keep your voice, values, and sense of humor in a noisy, divided world - Why community matters more than ever in the later chapters of life - How to face the ""final quarter"" not with fear, but with freedom, courage, and curiosity

Author Information

Vicki Thomas never expected to be one of the first Baby Boomers turning 80-but here she is, laughing about it and writing it all down. She's the Chief Purpose Officer at My Future Purpose, a certified gerontologist (yes, that means she studies aging while also living it), and winner of the 2013 $100,000 Encore.org Purpose Prize (now CoGenerate.org). She has survived transistor radios, rotary phones, shoulder pads, dial-up internet, and more commercials than she cares to admit. Now she's on a mission to prove that elderhood is not the end of the story-it's the best encore yet. When she's not working or writing, Vicki can be found volunteering in her community and running workshops on purposeful living. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, Steve, and their dogs, Finn and Sconnie, both of whom are very patient with her stories.
