Reviews

Just as Tibet as an image is currently fashionable, so Tibetan art is much in vogue, giving rise to the flood of both specialised monographs and lavish, pictoral coffee-table books. Of necessity, such works offer a narrow perspective and the wider view is lost, either in technical detail or in a surfeit of the Tibetan equivalent of 'old masters'. What is needed is a survey painted on a broad canvas, and this is exactly what Valrae Reynolds provides. The Tibetan collection in the Newark Museum is among the best in the world, and its great strength is its all-inclusive nature: from the finest paintings, sculpture and religious regalia, to the furniture, clothes and utensils of domestic life, all of it is there. And the best of the collection, both ancient and modern, and the work of both artist and craftsman, is presented - and set in its everyday context, whether secular or religious - in this magnificant book. The text, which is a model of clarity and thoroughness, is counterpointed perfectly by a wealth of stunning and exquisitely printed illustrations. It is unlikely to be bettered, and no-one seeking to understand Tibetan art could ask for anyhing more than that. (Kirkus UK)
