From the East Gate

Overview

From the East Gate is a highly personal and retrospective selection of sermons from 1996 to 2024, including reflections on what preaching is (and isn't), with an introductory essay on what the Bible is and how to read it. Linton's background in both Eastern Orthodox and Reformed theology (including a special interest in Karl Barth), combined with his lifelong interests in literature and the arts, make for a highly distinctive intersection of perspectives. His style is inviting and thought-provoking, gentle but also provocative, and draws his readers into deeper engagement not only with the Scriptures, but also into conversation with centuries of Christian thought. Deeply traditional in his theological grounding, he is also refreshingly difficult to categorize. Judicious elements of memoir scattered throughout (in which the wilds of Northwest Montana appear) make this collection all the more intriguing.

Reviews

""Hidden deep in Linton's marvelous volume on preaching, From the East Gate, is this thoughtful phrase, 'Repentance is insightful.' Insightful, indeed! If this be true, then call me a sinner seeking what Linton is preaching. . . . Add to this his absolute confidence in the biblical text--the preface is worth the price of the entire book! Mix in his background command of the literary greats . . . And finally, add the whimsy of a first-rate preacher, and you have a volume of sermons that is well worth reading."" --David Horn, Adjunct Faculty, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary ""Rev. Linton's investment through a lifetime of ministry continues to return dividends, not only in the lives of those to whom he has been a loving shepherd, but also to us, his readers. His scriptural meditations, channeled through his shepherd's heart, a rich intellect, and distilled into feasts digestible by the man or woman in the pew find here new service as rich resources for family worship, pastoral study, and personal devotion--a beautiful collection!"" --Samuel Micah Hunter, Director of Choirs, Stillwater Christian School ""This is a marvelous jewelry box of a book, each sermon a gem carefully cut and polished to refract the light of the gospel in myriad ways. It can serve as a devotional guide matching theological depth with pastoral warmth. I highly commend it to all."" --Sean McDonough, Mary F. Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary
