OverviewHistory is contemporary history. The three dimensions of spatial perception are rooted in the present. They have their origins in the past. What could be more fascinating than visualising the history of a building over time? That is precisely the subject of this paper. The historic past of the Fort Konstantin fortifications and that of the Lower Karthause in Koblenz provide ample material for this. The combination of 3D scanner data, floor plans and sectional drawings, as well as construction plans of the Kehlturm, old photographs, images and drawings, and not least historical information, makes it possible to graphically depict a wide range of eras spanning a period from around 400 AD to the present day. Through three-dimensional constructions followed by the application of synthetic materials, an appearance of the objects that is close to reality can be achieved. These are to be brought to life through integrated animations and effects. Light and shadow convey a three-dimensional impression to the viewer. Any problems arising in this context are analysed and discussed.
