It ranges boldly from Shamanism and ancient philosophy through Greek Christianity to Augustine and Descartes to the latest thinking on science and philosophy. It makes one vividly aware of the complexity of issues involved. -Paul Badham, University of Wales These essays offer a rich survey of our historical and scientific obsession with the notion of soul and self. -F. Scott Scribner, University of Connecticut, Waterbury
