Sturge Weber Syndrome can be scary, not only for the child but for the entire family! In this wonderful illustrated book, a two year old boy named Leo explains why he's special, what he (and his parents) are going through and why Sturge Weber doesn't need to be so scary. As a clinician who has cared for children with glaucoma for over 30 years I have learned it's often the parents who need the most reassurance that things will work out. If you're a parent dealing with this disease, read this charming book with your whole family and let Leo reassure all of you that it doesn't need to be so scary. -James D. Brandt, M.D. University of California, Davis

Author Information

I was born and raised in Orange, California, where orange trees were everywhere. I attended Pacific Christian College in Fullerton, and worked several years at Forest Home Christian Conference Center. After moving back home, I worked in the savings and loan business until I met my husband on a blind date; we married four months later. After our three daughters were older, I began working with my husband at a funeral home, although I was still involved with the girls in their academic, sports, and church activities. I have a cousin who was born with cerebral palsy, so I grew up knowing that we are not all the same. When my fourth grandson was born with a large Port Wine Stain on his face I wanted others to look past the visible difference and not be afraid to get to know the sweet and wonderful boy he is. It is difficult for many people to see beyond someone's appearance because everywhere we look, we only see perfect people in magazines and social media. I hope Leo's book will help you embrace others who are unique. Perhaps one day there will be someone in your life that is unique and wonderful.
