Overview

Juxtaposed with global competition and technological innovations, established educational models are receiving closer scrutiny than ever before, and universities can no longer expect to receive unwavering support without accountability. Students, parents, and legislators, encountering the rising cost of tuition, expanding student debt, and an uncertain job market, are demanding access to a lower-cost, efficient, and practical education. If you are a prospective or current leader within the academic hierarchy, how can you improve the present system to better meet the needs of today's undergraduate while conducting research to address societal issues? In order to remain relevant, university administrations must become multidimensional, strategic thinkers with a strong grasp of finance, human resources, external relations, and the importance of fund-raising. Having a concrete understanding of these key elements will enable universities to become self-reliant as well as prepare core faculty members for the future. A must-read for anyone hoping to comprehend the difficulties and understand the responsibilities of those in institutional management positions, From Ivory Tower to Glass House presents a clear picture of where we were, where we are, and where we need to be during this challenging time in higher education.
