He serves on the board of a number of environmental organisations and runs a management consultancy. In 1989 he was awarded the prestigious Stevenson-Hamilton Medal by the Zoological Society of Southern Africa for his contribution as an amateur zoologist. Louis du Preez is a professor of Zoology at the North-West University, South Africa, where he heads the African Amphibian Conservation research group.
