Friendly Guide to Revelation

Overview

"The Book of Revelation is the most challenging book in the New Testament. It has been part of the Christian Bible from the earliest times. It has been violently interpreted and has puzzled believers from the earliest decades of the Christian Church. It is traditionally read as a series of hostile symbolic narratives that describe what will happen at the end of time. This Friendly Guide questions that tradition. As part of a ""new look"" in Revelation studies, Professor Moloney insists that John of Patmos has used Jewish end-time language to speak of the never-ending presence of the forces of evil in the world, and the victory of God over those forces in and through the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is a book that instructs Christians where they should place their trust in troubled times."

Reviews

Puzzling, attractive in some respects, dangerous in others, no book of the New Testament stands in greater need of a 'friendly guide' than Revelation. Armed with a fresh approach and decades of experience as scholar, teacher, and communicator, Francis Moloney traces a sure path through this work. Brendan Byrne, SJ, Emeritus Professor, University of Divinity, Melbourne A Friendly Guide to the Book of Revelation comes at just the right time. Francis Moloney unravels for us one of the most complex books of the New Testament. His writing is clear and easy to follow. The focus of Revelation is not some future end-time calamity, but life right now, in the light of what has happened in Jesus. Moloney's text calls us to joy in the present moment of God's living presence among us. Mary Coloe, PBVM, Associate Professor, Yarra Theological Union, Melbourne Francis Moloney asks readers to encounter this apocalyptic text anew as a re-envisioning of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for Christians in danger of being seduced by the more immediate, however fleeting, gratifications of the larger society. John of Patmos therefore challenges Christians of all times to stand strong with God and the Lamb in the new Jerusalem. Sherri Brown, Ph. D., Associate Professor of New Testament, Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska Few commentators are capable of writing with the substance of a world class scholar and the clarity of a master teacher. Francis Moloney combines both in this volume as he takes us on an informative journey into that most enigmatic and confusing of New Testament writings. Christopher W. Skinner, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Loyola University, Chicago
