Friedr & Wim 1929-1934

Overview

Germany, early 1930s. The major banks collapse under the pressures of the Great Depression, the unemployed flock to under-resourced welfare offices, and political opponents clash in the streets and beer halls with escalating violence. For Friedrich, the Depression almost seems to offer redemption at first. As a farmer, he can aid those he cares about: his American wife, Janet, who longs for a liberated life; Sonka, twin of his fallen friend from the Great War; Albrecht, the communist intellectual who gave him work and education; and, of course, Wilhelm, his best friend and war comrade-now a diehard Nazi. Yet, as political tensions tear apart his sanctuary, Friedrich realises that no one can remain above politics. As he gravitates increasingly towards communism, the pillars around which he organised his life come under threat. The greatest of these, his friendship with Wilhelm - a bond they had both thought unbreakable. 'Friedr and Wim 1929-1934' is an exploration of the lingering pall of the Great War, political passions, and the personal repercussions of the tumultuous final years of the Weimar Republic - one of the most decisive periods in modern history.
