English summary: The studies in this book investigate the relevant aspects of symbolic communication with regard to friendship in medieval culture and literature. Medieval processes of symbolic communication, which were stronger than in the modern era, played a central role in the presence-invested culture. As a rule, symbols are ambiguous, and for this reason they are infused with a structural polysemy. The contributions to this book are dedicated to examining the signifiers of friendship in medieval discourse as well as their predecessors from classical antiquity, in courtly literature, pre-Christian epics, and in legendary as well as historical narratives. Some of the themes presented in this book are concerned with diverse guests, gifts, and symbols and various types of friendship: friendship as a political relationship, as a close, personal relationships as well as the relationship to God. The studies, therefore, present a wide ranging and multifaceted image of medieval concepts of friendship. Starker als in der Moderne spielen in einer auf Prasenz angelegten Kultur wie der mittelalterlichen Prozesse zeichenhafter Kommunikation eine zentrale Rolle. Zeichen sind in aller Regel ambig, deshalb eignet ihnen eine strukturelle Polysemie. Diesem Aspekt widmen sich die Beitrage, die Freundschaftszeichen in mittelalterlichen Diskursen und ihren antiken Vorlaufern, in hofischen, heldenepischen, legendarischen sowie historischen Erzahlungen untersuchen. Thematisiert werden neben unterschiedlichen Gesten, Gaben und Symbolen auch verschiedene Typen von Freundschaft: Freundschaft als politische Beziehung, als personliche Nahbeziehung sowie als Beziehung zu Gott. Die Beitrage liefern damit ein breit angelegtes und vielschichtiges Bild mittelalterlicher Freundschaftskonzeptionen.
