Overview

Pierre Cardin was the first luxury fashion designer to embark on global expansion by opening stores all over the world, including Japan, China, and Russia. His fashion shows in China in the 1970s were the first by a Western fashion designer. Pierre Cardin is a phenomenon, a unique figure in both the fashion and the business worlds. The son of impoverished Italian parents who emigrated to France, he began his tailoring career in wartime Vichy and his fashion career by sewing for Paquin and Dior. In 1949 he opened his own couture house, and before long he was being hailed as one of the brilliant young men who would inherit the mantle of Balenciaga and Chanel and Schiaparelli.
