(Shmuel Niger) Wie wirksam ist der Zauber fremder Poesie, übersetzt in eine kleine Sprache? Der vorliegende Band widmet sich den schonungslos selbstkritischen Reflexionen jiddischer Übersetzer, Kritiker, Korrektoren, Pädagogen und Übersetzungsforscher, vornehmlich im polnischen und sowjetischen Kulturraum der Zwischenkriegszeit. Die Erschließung neuer künstlerischer Formen und ästhetischer Begriffe in extensiver Übersetzungstätigkeit und -kritik und deren kreative Aneignung trieben die Entwicklung der jiddisch-säkularen Kultur und ihrer Literatur voran. Im jiddischen Warschau reflektierte man das Ringen um Sprache, diskutierte Übersetzungsstrategien, kritisierte die Willkür der Verlagsprogramme und forderte deren Systematisierung. Jiddisch-sowjetische Forscher und Literaten wandten die entstehende russisch-linguistische Übersetzungstheorie auf ihre Arbeit an. Kritik literarischer Übersetzung, etwa von Werken Krylows, Puschkins und Twains, aus wissenschaftlicher, philologischer und editionstechnischer Sicht waren auch im amerikanischen Kontinent verbreitet. Der Band umfasst 33 Essays, den Auftakt bildet eine kleine Auswahl zur berühmten Übersetzung der gesamten hebräischen Bibel ins moderne Jiddisch durch Yehoyesh.
