Later, under his own name, he wrote several naval histories covering, amongst other topics, Nelson, Admiral Charles Lord Beresford (Charlie B) and Jutland. During the Second World War he saw active service at Salerno (where he was awarded the DSC and went on to command HMS St Bride's Bay). After the war he spent some time as naval attache in Moscow.
