Freedom and chaos: Internet, consumerism, climate, and the great challenges of the 21st century

Overview

Freedom and Chaos: Internet, Consumerism, Climate, and the Great Challenges of the 21st Century is an essay that examines the obstacles to freedom in contemporary Western societies, exploring their historical, economic, technological, and psychological roots. The book begins with the global reorganization following the Second World War, highlighting the impact of the Cold War, capitalism, and consumerism. It then investigates the influence of the Internet and social media in spreading the ""post-truth"" society, where emotions and beliefs often prevail over facts. The analysis continues with the neoliberal revolution of the 1970s, which encouraged economic growth at the expense of the environment and collective well-being. The book also explores human cognitive dissonance, social insecurity, and the widespread lack of self-esteem. The essay proposes concrete solutions, such as education for more sustainable lifestyles and the development of algorithms to combat fake news. Through an analysis that ranges from the individual to the global level, Freedom and Chaos offers an innovative and multidisciplinary approach, combining sociology, history, psychology, politics, and technology to outline practical strategies that can help people become truly freer.

Author Information

Christian Nicola Nota is an economist and political analyst at the European Commission, as well as the author of essays and novels on social and political issues. In 2020, he published his first novel, Run!, which explores the theme of schizophrenia and the search for redemption. In 2022, he released his second novel, The sea of hope, narrating a young migrant's turbulent and devastating journey from Africa to Italy. Most recently, he co-founded a podcast called Moving Europe, where he discusses the most pressing political, social, economic, and cultural issues affecting the European Union - from an EU-27 perspective rather than that of individual Member States. With this new essay, Nota delves into the transformations of both individual and collective freedom in the global context, offering a detailed and insightful analysis of the major social and political dynamics of our time.
