Reviews

Fred is a heart-warming story about a book who is shy of being read, his attempts to escape being noticed, and the visually-impaired girl who comes to love him. Arlene Peters writes with compassion and wit, and Rebecca Holland's illustrations are simply wonderful. Mark Laurent, children's book author Rufus and the Rain. Fred, The Book Who Didn't Want To Be Read, by Arlene Peters, is a delightful and engaging story in which a book personifies the human fear of opening up to new people. At first, Fred does the typical thing that a human would do to cope with his insecurity; he avoids. But then, things unfold in his life that compel him to face this fear head-on and Fred learns that things aren't as bad as what he thought they may be. This book's emphasis on Fred's anxious thoughts and actions can assist children who experience these difficult emotions. As Fred overcomes his challenge by going with the flow of events unfolding that are out of his control, the reader is engaged in suspense about what will happen to Fred and kept delighted by the wonderful illustrations which capture Fred's journey to confidence and unconditional love perfectly ! Debbie Birt, psychologist Author of Mr Wiggles has the Wobbles .

Author Information

Arlene is a New Zealand born Australian. Her two adult children, their life partners and two grandchildren add a joyful narrative to her life. Arlene's first full time employment involved caring for visually-impaired children. An early childhood favourite was a book called ""The Nine Friendly Dogs"" by Felix Sutton because through this story she experienced the faithful relationship potential between dog and man. Both of these factors have influenced the writing of her debut book entitled ""Fred The Book Who Didn't Want To Be Read."" Rebecca is an illustrator living in Brisbane, Australia, with her husband and three young sons. She loves drawing, reading, creating and going on adventures with her family. Rebecca illustrates under the name Room to Wonder, and aims to foster a love of nature and adventure in children through her colourful illustrations.
