Fred, The Book Who Didn't Want To Be Read, by Arlene Peters, is a delightful and engaging story in which a book personifies the human fear of opening up to new people. At first, Fred does the typical thing that a human would do to cope with his insecurity; he avoids. But then, things unfold in his life that compel him to face this fear head-on and Fred learns that things aren't as bad as what he thought they may be. This book's emphasis on Fred's anxious thoughts and actions can assist children who experience these difficult emotions. As Fred overcomes his challenge by going with the flow of events unfolding that are out of his control, the reader is engaged in suspense about what will happen to Fred and kept delighted by the wonderful illustrations which capture Fred's journey to confidence and unconditional love perfectly !
