Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797-1851) fue la única hija de William Godwin y Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, dos pensadores progresistas que se encargaron de introducirla en los ambientes intelectuales. Con apenas catorce años, conoció al joven poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley y huyó con él a Francia. Convivieron por algún tiempo y cuando se suicidó la primera esposa del poeta, se casaron. El matrimonio, que duró ocho años, vivió en distintos países y formó parte del círculo de poetas románticos que frecuentaba lord Byron. A los veintiún años, Mary Shelley publicó su primera novela, Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo (1818), que obtuvo un gran éxito.
