Author Information

John M. (Jack) Sharp, Jr. is the Carlton Professor of Geology in Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Texas. He has a Bachelor of Geological Engineering from the University of Minnesota and MS and PhD degrees in hydrogeology from the University of Illinois. He has served as the President of the Geological Society of America (GSA) and as an officer in both the American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) and the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH). His honours include the GSA’s Meinzer, AIH’s Theis, IAH’s Presidents’, and the Association of Engineering Geologists’ Publication Awards as well as Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi. He is a Fellow of the GSA and the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. His research covers flow in fractured and carbonate rocks, thermohaline free convection, sedimentary basin hydrogeology, subsidence and coastal land loss, groundwater management, and the effects of urbanization. His hobbies include gardening, genealogy, fishing, duck hunting, Australia, opera, UT football, and (before bad knees) handball.
