Overview

This book takes a fundamentally platform independent approach to web programming, and shows that it is not necessary to be tied to any particular language or web interface in order to create fully functional web applications. It is therefore accessible to web programmers regardless of the platform with which they choose to work. The platforms supported include (but are not limited to) Perl or PHP with CGI, C# with ASP.NET, and Java servlets. As well as developing web programming as a platform independent endeavour, this book looks at the strong mathematical basis that this approach admits. It shows how the functionality of web applications can be specified in a formal symbolic language, and how their implementations can be verified against such specifications in a manner entirely analogous to mathematical proof.
