Foundations of Afrocentric Studies: Personalities and Positions

Overview

Molefi Kete Asante is the most published African American scholar. He is a fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, a holder of several honorary degrees. Asante received his doctorate from UCLA and has taught at several universities in the United States and Africa. Foundations of Afrocentric Studies exhibits Asante's association with intellectuals and activists who have impacted his development of Afrocentricity. He introduces the readers to giants of African thought such as Cheikh Anta Diop, Christel Temple, Carter G. Woodson, Alton Hornsby, Katherine Bankole-Medina, and Maulana Karenga. Written for the general public and educators who seek to become familiar with African and African diaspora scholars who have contributed to the emergence of Afrocentricity, a philosophy first articulated by Molefi Kete Asante in 1980. Although the metatheory has gone through some modifications it remains the dominant framework for Afrocentric scholarship throughout the world. Reading this book will give you a first-hand account of some of the most important thinkers in the African world. Molefi Kete Asante has multiple African ancestors, according to DNA analysis, that include Nigeria, Mali, Sudan, Ghana, and Cameroon. He has more than 700 publications including 106 books. On the front cover of this book is the late great African Egyptian sage, Hamdy Ercaibh of Elephantine Island, who taught Asa Hilliard, Yosef ben Jochannan, and Molefi Kete Asante about the black heritage of Egypt, the country of his birth. Sage Hamdy Ercaibh is remembered as one of the foundation stones in the Afrocentric building.
