Fostering Community through Digital Storytelling: A Guide for Academic Libraries

Overview

Digital stories are brief multi-modal digital videos, which libraries can use to engage their staff members with one another, to market library services and collections, to attract donors, and most importantly, to engage students and faculty with the library. Fields and Diaz address the how-tos of creating digital stories, as well as the challenges of building a digital storytelling program and creating partnerships across campus. Of primary interest to academic librarians and instructional technology staff.

Reviews

The authors provide the theory and philosophy behind digital storytelling and also useful practical applications of the process. They suggest the video be 3-5 minutes in length. This will require succinct storytelling, poignant video images and appropriate music if desired. The hope is to engage and inspire, not bore the audience. Other ideas come from using stories from your faculty, using digital storytelling in the classroom as an assignment or to stimulate conversation meeting students' unique and diverse learning styles. - Colorado Association of Libraries Focusing on academic libraries, Anne M. Fields and Karen R. Diaz address the use of digital video to reach out to patrons. Other libraries can also benefit from the knowledge and experience presented in these seven chapters. . . . The index enables the work to be used as a reference work, while the writing style encourages cover-to-cover reading for the first-time user. Addressing new and previous technologies used for social networking and community building, Fostering Community Through Digital Storytelling enables the librarian to reach out to patrons and understand this need to reach patrons through what one might view to be the impersonal technologies of today. - ARBA This book will be a useful resource to library managers; library programme co-ordinators; library marketing staff; and librarians. It is also suitable for college students, university administrators, and faculty members. The general reader will also benefit from this book to gain knowledge about digital storytelling for social networking in the new media.. . . The unique contribution of this book is that it focuses on the potential of digital storytelling in the niche area of academic libraries and in higher education to foster learning and community. This book is a useful resource and is recommended for both the library specialist and the general reader. - Program At a time when we hear much of the problems facing libraries in maintaining a valued place in the academic setting, it is refreshing to read this clear account of an innovative approach to building a campus-wide programme in collaboration with units throughout the university. I thoroughly enjoyed this informative and wellcrafted book and recommend it highly. - The Australian Library Journal

Thoughtful and well researched, this book is vital not just because it documents how Digital Storytelling has transformed parts of the educational environment, but it suggests ways that story can transform education as a whole. -Joe Lambert Founder and Director Center for Digital Storytelling
