Forever Brooklyn: Images from New York's Most Iconic Borough

Overview

Captures the borough's vibrant diversity, blending striking photography and stories of its people, neighborhoods, and culture. Forever Brooklyn is a book of stories. Some are told with words, but most are told with images. Much like Brooklyn itself, this is a book full of life, energy, and hope. At its heart, this is a book about people. With more than 2.7 million residents, Brooklyn is the world in microcosm. It is a place defined by immigration and gentrification, where extreme wealth and working-class grit share the same subway line. It is a place where historic brownstones stand in the shadows of gleaming high rises and where family-owned bodegas sit alongside trendy boutiques. Brooklyn is many things at once: old and new, traditional and progressive, restless yet rooted. On a good day, Brooklyn is a whirlwind. On a bad day, a tornado. At any given time, it is both. Photographers Liz Cooke and Andy Milford take readers from the gentrified neighborhoods of Park Slope and Williamsburg to the immigrant enclaves of Brighton Beach and Sunset Park, from the brownstones of Brooklyn Heights to the boardwalk in Coney Island. From street life to street art, Forever Brooklyn showcases the energy, diversity, and vitality that make Brooklyn, Brooklyn.

Author Information

Liz Cooke was born in New York City and divides her time between her beloved Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley. Her interest in photography may be inborn, since she grew up knowing that Weegee, an esteemed street photographer, was her uncle. This set a high bar that has never been approached! As a college student, Liz received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to photograph Holocaust survivors and Soviet emigres in her childhood neighborhood of Brighton Beach. She has since traveled extensively, documenting the lives and stories of fascinating people and places. Andy Milford was born and raised in England and currently resides in Long Island, NY. Influenced by his father who worked out of an ad hoc darkroom in the family bathroom, he has gone on to become a prolific photographer. This has developed into a passion that wears out, on average, one camera per year. His favored subject matter includes urban exploration, abandonment, street art, Americana, reflections, and anything that casts an interesting shadow. His work has been published in South Korea, England, and the United States.
