She grew up in San Jose, California where she trained at Almaden Valley Gymnastics Club and competed in USA Gymnastics' Junior Olympic program for ten years. Melisa then earned her BA at Utah State University where she studied Psychology and Literature and competed for their NCAA Division 1 Gymnastics Team.
