OverviewHow does one define a hero? Hollywood only depicts those landing on a beach or parachuting behind enemy lines. For every hero on the battlefield in World War II, there were many others working behind the scenes to give those directly in combat the tools to succeed. Their contributions are rarely discussed, but equally heroic. The importance of the aircraft carrier in our victory in World War II is well-documented, but not much is known about the men who designed and built them. This is the story of one man, but could be the story of many of those who stayed behind and used their creative skills to help win the war. Admiral Haeberle was the main design engineer for the bulk of the World War 2 aircraft carriers as well as being in charge of the construction of the USS North Carolina Battleship and the USS Louisville Heavy Cruiser, earning the Legion of Merit and a Gold Star in lieu of a second Legion of Merit.
