OverviewSince its introduction in chemical analysis in the early 70s, flow injection analysis (FIA) has developed into a powerful technique for solution manipulation prior to detection, allowing a high degree of automation with relatively inexpensive equipment. Though the principles on which FIA is based are well understood and have been summarized in numerous books, insufficient attention has been paid to the theory elucidating those principles and revealing additional areas of application of the technique. This book fills that gap in the literature by outlining the theory of FIA and its interrelation with that of chromatography and process analysis. The most recent achievements in the modelling of flow injection systems, which allow not only a better understanding of the phenomena occurring in these systems but also the prediction of their behaviour and the possibility for their optimization, are reported. Further more, applications of flow injection systems in scientific areas different from quantitative chemical analysis (eg. physical chemistry, membrane technology, enzymology, new materials) are described.
