Overview

In eighteenth century London, a baby is left at the Foundling Hospital. She is numbered 5537, given the name Flora Wild, and sent off to a foster mother. Five years later, without warning Flora is returned to the Foundling Hospital. The shock of being wrenched from the person Flora believed to be her mother, renders her speechless. She struggles to adapt to her new life causing Matron Grubb to label her insolent and set her to work in the laundry. By the age of twelve, Flora has almost accepted her fate, but then she overhears gossip that sparks her curiousity to discover her true identity. With the help of her friends, Sarah and Maud, Flora risks punishment in the dreaded Cat's Garret and embarks on a quest to find her birth mother. But does Flora succeed in her search and fulfill her desire for a better future than the predicted one in service she so dreads?
