Overview

The Vietnam War is the commonly used name for the Second Indochina War, 1954-1975. Usually, it refers to the period when the United States and other members of the SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) joined the forces with the Republic of South Vietnam to contest communist forces, comprised of South Vietnamese guerrillas and regular-force units, generally known as Viet Cong (VC), and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). The U.S., possessing the largest foreign military presence, essentially directed the war from 1965 to 1968. For this reason, in Vietnam today it is known as the American War. Little Huong Yang, aged three, runs for her life to a cave in the mountains as a US fighter-bomber swoops low over her village. It is a pattern repeated many times over the next eight years. Twice, her home and the whole street where they lived are razed to the ground in bomb attacks. Superstition is rife on the island after 13 women drown in mysterious circumstances and many villagers are struck down after a fish 'god' is killed. Peace brings new dangers for ethnic Chinese families like Huong's and they are forced out of Vietnam, taking the Railway of Death then wading over the Red River into China. After escaping from a state farm, they set out on a perilous 1,000-mile voyage in a tiny boat, only to face six years in a refugee camp. Can she survive a blazing inferno as she huddles, trapped, on the roof of a 13-story factory? Her family's flight to freedom is a gripping, true story of courage, emotion, fortitude, and romance.
