She has worked on community documentation projects in Michigan, California, Indiana, Georgia, and Florida for organizations such as the Michigan State University Museum and the South Georgia Folklife Project at Valdosta State University. Throughout the past three decades she has taught university courses in folklore and ethnomusicology and developed numerous public arts and humanities programs, including folk festivals, museum exhibits, and documentary radio.
