Reviews

"There are some basic rules regarding books to aid acquisition of a foreign language. First, don't break up the flow of the language. So for parallel text books, have all Language A on one page and all Language B on the facing page. That way the reader can refer to the native language translation only when he/she needs help; otherwise one can continue to read in the foreign language without suffering ""first language interference."" This book obeys that rule and so is a joy to read. The second rule is reinforcement. Keep repeating the key words and phrases germane to that stage of acquisition. Again, this book obeys that rule. This is an improvement over Volume 1 of this series. The layouts for the vocabulary lists and parallel texts are easier for the reader to look at it. The audio recordings have better sound quality than in the previous book and the recordings include readings of the vocabulary lists, which were not included in Volume 1. The speaker has a very slow and deliberate delivery with noticeable pauses, which is probably an advantage for a beginner level learner, but it might be a bit frustrating for anyone wanting something more natural sounding. The early chapters have a bias towards stories about animals while the later chapters show a greater diversity of subjects. The amount of vocabulary in each vocabulary list for most chapters is 50 to 100 items, some of which are accompanied by a code indicating a word's verb tense or noun case so that the reader can understand more readily what context a certain tense or case appears in. I found it extremely useful since it started out with very simple language and slowly added new words while repeating previous ones. Also of great benefit was the fact that they mark the stressed syllable in each word which is very helpful since stress in the Russian language is so important. I found this book to be entertaining even though it contained simple stories and the repetition really does the trick for helping to cement the grammatical concepts and vocabulary in my head. Russian is difficult, but this series of books really make it much more tolerable."
