His professional career spans forty years as director of library services at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell, Montana, where he also taught Montana history, handgun marksmanship, and English composition. Ober worked as a wildland firefighter, backcountry ranger, and law enforcement road patrol ranger in Glacier National Park for forty-four years. He is retired and resides in Kalispell, Montana.
