John W. Cane was born in Germany, immigrated to the United States at the age of 4 and grew up on Long Island, New York. He holds the degrees of Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from Cornell University, Master of Science in Physics from US Naval Postgraduate School, and Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Information Systems from Nova Southeastern University. He served for twenty-one years as a regular line officer in the US Navy at sea aboard destroyers, and ashore in nuclear weapons research and development. While in the Navy and stationed at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory (now, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) in 1969-1972, he was a member of the group of designers who carried out some of the earliest computer simulations of inertial-confinement themonuclear fusion reactions
