OverviewDuring the academic year 1998-1999 the annual Fortis Bank Chair of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven on Current Developments in European Integration was devoted to Financial Services and Financial Markets. The course consisted of a series of lectures, which are now published in the present book. The texts in this volume examine the changes in the financial market place as a result of the introduction of the single currency in Europe, after the establishment of the European Central Bank. In recent years, financial operators and financial markets had to adapt not only to the Euro but also to the information society and to globalisation of business. Recent years have also seen spectacular mergers and acquisitions in the financial sector, which led to important decisions of the European Commission in its capacity of competition authority. The emancipation of consumers has also led to new regulations and new tasks for the authorities supervising the financial market place. Finally there is the ongoing liberalisation of financial services and, more recently, the attention for corporate governance. In this volume the reader will find a scholarly discussion about this issues in their economic- or legal aspects.
