Financial Literacy & Inclusion: How Knowledge Drives Banking, Investments & Economic Empowerment

Overview

Financial literacy is a key determinant of financial well-being, influencing investment behavior, banking access, and overall economic inclusion. In an increasingly complex financial landscape, understanding fundamental financial concepts is essential for making informed financial decisions. This study explores the role of financial literacy in shaping financial participation and the utilization of financial services in the Kalaburagi district of Karnataka. Despite various financial inclusion initiatives in India, a significant portion of the population remains financially excluded due to limited financial awareness. The research investigates the relationship between financial literacy and financial inclusion by analyzing secondary data from the National Center for Financial Education (NCFE) and primary survey data collected from households in Kalaburagi. A multistage random sampling method ensures representative data across diverse demographic groups, including variations in gender, age, education, occupation, and income levels. The findings highlight that financial literacy significantly influences investment choices and banking access. Individuals with higher financial knowledge are more likely to engage in diverse investment options, utilize banking services, and adopt digital financial tools. However, there remains a strong preference for traditional investments such as gold and real estate, with lower awareness and usage of modern financial instruments like mutual funds and stock markets. Regression analysis indicates a strong positive correlation between financial literacy and financial product utilization, underscoring the need for targeted financial education programs. To bridge the financial literacy gap, policymakers, financial institutions, and educators must implement comprehensive financial literacy initiatives. Integrating financial education into school curricula, conducting community-based workshops, launching digital financial awareness campaigns, and designing tailored programs for marginalized groups can significantly improve financial knowledge and participation.
