Reviews

?Seldom has so much valuable information been placed in such a small volume with such finesse. The editor has set out to evaluate the fighting capabilities of various armies which have recently or may soon engage in hostilities. Instead of an eclectic collection of essays, each author addresses the same aspects. Consistency in criteria facilitates the comparison of rival armies. Each short analysis covers history, equipment, organization, manpower, the social strata of officers, strategy, training, and effectiveness. The criteria are sufficiently basic to make the work valuable into the next decade. Of special note are the comments on the increasingly popular militia organizations. Being of broad scope, yet in concise form, the work is a valuable resource for the armchair pundit or the serious scholar who requires a ready reference.?-Military Review
