Overview

The go-to guide for identifying grasshoppers and related species that occur in the British isles. Grasshoppers and their allies draw attention to themselves not only by their active movements but also by their bright colours and song. This brand new beautifully illustrated field guide covers the 70 or so species of grasshoppers, cockroaches, stick insects, earwigs and praying mantids that may be encountered in the British countryside. A comprehensive introduction covers life history and field techniques, and is followed by detailed species accounts that include important identification details, along with information on food, habitat, conservation status and range, supplemented with distribution maps, sonograms and life history charts. Together with stunning photographs and Richard Lewington's exceptional artwork, this book is set to become the definitive guide to the orthoptera of the British Isles.

Author Information

Peter Sutton has coordinated the Grasshoppers and Related Insects Recording Scheme for 18 years and contributes a regular column to British Wildlife magazine documenting the changes that have occurred to this group of insects in the British Isles. He has also written the IUCN threat status review for Orthoptera, as well as the book The Larger Water Beetles of the British Isles, and has published many other entomological pieces. Björn Beckmann is an ecologist at the Biological Records Centre (BRC) and has been coordinating the recording scheme with Peter since 2009. He analysed the scheme's data for his PhD, and along with colleagues at BRC he created the iRecord Grasshoppers mobile app and the scheme website. Björn also organised the Royal Entomological Society's annual day of orthopteran research talks from 2013 to 2020. Richard Lewington is regarded as being one of Europe's finest wildlife illustrators. He studied graphic design at the Berkshire College of Art and, since leaving in 1971, has specialised in natural-history illustration. His meticulous paintings of insects and other wildlife are the mainstay of many of the modern classics of field-guide art, including The Butterflies of Britain and Ireland, Field Guide to the Moths of Great Britain and Ireland, Guide to Garden Wildlife and Field Guide to the Bees of Great Britain and Ireland. He has also designed and illustrated wildlife stamps for several countries. In 1999 he was awarded Butterfly Conservation's Marsh Award for the promotion of Lepidoptera conservation, and in 2010 the Zoological Society of London's Stamford Raffles Award for contribution to zoology.
