During the 1980s he became aware of the Fiat 124 Spider, a car that was rare in New Zealand at the time, and eventually managed to buy one. He had previously been using the family 124 Coupé for some classic racing. The car was completed in its original form in late 1989, and first raced in February 1990. He has retained ownership since then. Campbell had extensive experience in administering car club affairs and events, eventually being elected to the executive of the governing motorsport body in New Zealand. Through his car club involvement, and close friendship with Fiat specialists, his knowledge around Fiat 124s, and the Spider in particular grew. This, coupled with an interest in writing, and retirement from his career meant he has been able to put his interest to good use for the benefit of others.
