Feminist Research in Practice

Overview

Feminist Research in Practice is a supplementary text for undergraduate and graduate research methods courses. The book opens with a detailed examination of feminist methodologies and sociological research methods, followed by twelve chapters offering an in-depth analysis of six research projects. Invited scholars have each contributed two paired chapters: the first is data-driven and includes a description of methods and findings as well as analysis, allowing contributors to highlight their application of feminist methods and approaches in their work. In the second of each pair, contributors offer a close reflection on the research process, including obstacles and the emergence of new inquiries, allowing readers to deepen their own understanding of feminist research as it is practiced. The projects themselves are diverse in focus and approach with both large and small research teams working in varied communities and using an assortment of methods. Feminist Research in Practice closes with an extensive bibliography of recent and established research literature for further consideration.

Reviews

This new feminist sociology text edited by Barbara Gurr and Maura Kelly represents an important contribution to the body of contemporary feminist literature. The chapters demonstrate the reflexive practice at the heart of this book's ethos, and its diversity is practiced as well as critically analysed. Their focus on methods here will be a welcome resource for students and teachers in higher education who seek critical, intersectional and up-to-the-minute approaches grounded in contemporary events and thinking. It represents a wonderful companion read to the recent Contemporary Feminist Research and Practice (Leavy & Harris, Guilford 2018). -- Anne M. Harris, Principal Research Fellow, RMIT University An innovative and engaging text on feminist methodologies. Pairing empirical and reflective chapters from sociologists grappling with putting feminist principles into action in their research, Feminist Research in Practice is a perfect addition to undergraduate and graduate courses in sociological methods as well as gender. Through this book students can gain crucial insights into what goes into creating empirical research that is systematic, rigorous, and undeniably feminist. -- Miriam J. Abelson, Portland State University
