Overview

Feminist Art Education Archival Research: C.H.U.T.N.E.Y. Power explores the National Art Education Association’s (NAEA) Women’s Caucus’ histories of trailblazing feminist art education research, leadership, and policy activism. From archival research, specifically delving into the NAEA Women’s Caucus Archive at The Pennsylvania State University, this led to interviews with feminist activists in art education. The book draws attention to the activism of the NAEA Women’s Caucus contextualized within tenets of critical race feminism, which calls for organizational accountability from critical examination of hegemonic structures and practices that privilege white patriarchal colonialism and serves as a structure to deconstruct, interrogate, disrupt, and reimagine inequities that exist in art education, and all of education. Feminist Art Education Archival Research: C.H.U.T.N.E.Y. Power is a unique text ideal for feminist organizations, gender studies research, and art educators at all levels of teaching from preK to higher education, and is an ideal companion text for post-secondary art education, women’s studies, leadership, and other related areas.

Reviews

""Feminist Art Education Archival Research is a meticulously researched and profoundly insightful volume. This essential text is a testament to the transformative power of feminist scholarship and activism. Drawing on 50 years of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Women’s Caucus archives, the authors offer a reflective analysis shaped by their own experiences with sexism in academia. They highlight the importance of archives in uncovering untold stories and illuminating marginalized histories. Their innovative and imaginative approach to archival research explores critical themes such as coalition-building, equity, and intersectionality, providing an indispensable resource for educators, researchers, students, and advocates. Framed within a unique and evocative metaphorical structure, this book is a compelling call to action for systemic change in art education and beyond."" - Doug Blandy, Professor Emeritus, College of Design, Folklore, and Public Culture at the University of Oregon, USA ""The authors of this timely publication share insights, wisdom, and hard-earned victories carefully mined from the Women’s Caucus archives. We are indebted to them for this rich presentation of aspirations held, challenges faced, and advancements celebrated by the NAEA Women’s Caucus and its broadening coalition. The moving stream of archival discoveries shared reflects the light of visionary activism strengthened by a strong community committed to advancing the equity, visibility, and opportunities of diverse women and all marginalized people. Illuminating stories and interviews remind us of both challenging undercurrents of oppression and positive professional gains. The reader is inspired and motivated, rather than directed, to continue the work of those who have impacted the professional development of women and advanced feminist perspectives in art education content, research, and leadership. Each of us is called to share our authentic voice and to use our CHUTNEY power together for the common good."" - Barbara Caldwell, Professor of Art and Visual Culture, Iowa State University, USA
