Overview

"The year 2016 was a significant year for honouring Professor Fei Xiaotong (1910-2005), because it was the 80th anniversary of his fieldwork in Kaixiangong Village. Fei Xiaotong Studies (Volume 2) consists of articles by authors from the UK, Japan, USA, Germany, China and Hong Kong. The main articles focus on Fei Xiaotong and related studies, with China in comparative perspective. It also includes a reflective article that demonstrates the process of the globalization in Chinese sociology, and a predictive article that provides a vision of world anthropology with China and other countries as participants. Four appendices are included in this book. They are 'Chinese Social Science' - a branch of 'Chinese for Specific Purposes' (CSP) - written by UK-based Chinese educators and experts in translation studies, a dialogue among American, UK/Chinese and German/Chinese scholars exemplifies how Fei Xiaotong's work contributed to the globalization of China's sociology and anthropology, and a translation into English of President Xi Jinping's speech given at the National Symposium on Philosophy and Social Sciences in 2016, as it may be helpful for understanding the characteristics of philosophical social science as a Chinese school of social science and promoting the globalization of Chinese social sciences. This is also Volume 2 in the Globalization of Chinese Social Sciences book series, edited by Xiangqun Chang, Director of Global China Institute and Honorary Professor of University College London, UK. The Globalization of Chinese Social Sciences book series is published jointly by Global China Press (GCP) and New World Press (NWP). GCP is the first UK-based publisher specializing in dual language publications that focus on Chinese perspectives of the world and human knowledge and non-Chinese perspectives of China in a global context. NWP was founded in 1951, and is a member of the China International Publishing Group (CIPG). It publishes multilingual books on social sciences, literature, management and other disciplines that serve to introduce China to the world. As early as the 1980s, NWP published the China Study series in English, covering China's economy, politics, ethnicity, population, history, sociology and anthropology, and including Fei Xiaotong's Toward a People's Anthropology (1981), Chinese Village Close-Up (1982) and Small Towns in China (1986).

Author Information

"Stephan Feuchtwang is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at the London School of Economics (LSE). He established the first centre for social scientific study on China in the UK (1973) at City University London, and the MSc China in Comparative Perspective Programme (2006) at the LSE, to date the only one of its kind in the world. He was Present of the British Association of China Studies (BACS). He has been engaged in research on popular religion and politics in mainland China and Taiwan since 1966, resulting in a number of publications on charisma, place, temples and festivals, and civil society. He has recently been engaged in a comparative project exploring the theme of the recognition of catastrophic loss, including the loss of archive and recall, which in Chinese cosmology and possibly elsewhere is pre-figured in the category of ghosts. Most recently he has been pursuing a project on the comparison of civilizations and empires. He has published more than ten books and a few dozen articles, including Popular Religion in China: The Imperial Metaphor (1991, 2001) and After the Event: The Transmission of Grievous Loss in Germany, China and Taiwan (2011). Popular Religion in China: The Imperial Metaphor (1991, 2001, 中译本 《帝国的隐喻 中国民间宗教》, 赵旭东译, 1999), After the Event: The Transmission of Grevious Loss in Germany, China and Taiwan (2011)。 Xiangqun Chang is Director of Global China Institute, Editor of Journal of China in Comparative Perspective (JCCP), and Chief Editor of Global China Press; Honorary Professor at University College London, Professorial Research Associate at SOAS, University London, UK, and holder of several professorships and senior fellowships at Peking, Renmin, Fudan and Sun Yat-sen universities in China. To date the only UK-based sociologist trained in both China and the UK, she has been working at universities on social scientific studies of China interdisciplinarily since 1991, when she came to the UK as a Visiting Fellow. In the past two-plus decades Xiangqun has conducted about two dozen research projects and published over two million Chinese characters and English words. Based on a thorough and detailed ethnography of a Chinese village with longitudinal comparisons, she developed a general analytical concept - 'recipropriety' (lishang-wanglai 礼尚往来) - a Chinese model of reciprocity, relatedness and social networks (see Guanxi or Li shang wanglai? Reciprocity, Social Support Networks, & Social Creativity in a Chinese Village, 2010). This 'recipropriety model' is being tested in many projects with both interdisciplinary and comparative approaches. ZHOU Daming is Professor of the School of Anthropology and Sociology, Chang Jiang Scholar Distinguished Professor of Ministry of Education, Director of the Ethnic Group Study Centre, Sun Yat-sen University, Deputy Director of Historical Anthropology Research Center, Ministry of Education Humanities and Social Science Key Research Base at Sun Yat-sen University, and Vice-president of the China Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (UAES), China.
