Fear of Health Deceived by Illness

Overview

Written in the form of a novel, this book describes in detail the life of a dear friend with Munchausen Syndrome. Myra had a wonderful, compassionate, sensitive personality which seemed to override any ill effects from the original condition of the mental illness. She could turn this behav-ior on or off at will, claiming she was cured of this behav-ior, wanting to help others do the same. No medical organ-izations throughout the whole world would give her medi-cal help when she really needed it because she was on an international blacklist -- except for one heroic psychiatrist who took an interest and tried to help. The medical community in general believes that Mun-chausen Syndrome is incurable. There is no specified pat-tern of treatment, since each case is very individual and each person is different. It is all the more extraordinary that in Myra's case, she mostly cured herself, over time analyzing her condition and doing something about it.In defense of medical professionals, dealing with a Mun-chausen patient is a lose-lose situation. People with this mental illness generally waste time and resources better spent on patients who are really ill and need treatment. The Catch-22 usually comes when the Munchausen pa-tient really needs help and cannot get it. This happened with Myra and turned out to be fatal. The facts documented herein are completely true, followed by a general description of mental illness and how once labeled, the mentally ill patient usually has major trouble with this stereotype long after this mental illness has been treated and conquered. All names and some places have been changed. This is a must-read for all who believe in compassion and second chances for people who have made mistakes in their lives. Mental illness or not, we all make mistakes.
