Overview

Children are all too often the silent victims of their parent's issues with substance abuse. My 8 year old daughter lost her mother to addiction. Initially I told her that her mother's heart failed, which, I guess it partly true. I had no idea how to even begin to explain addiction to an 8 year old. However, knowing that it is my responsibility to tell my daughter the truth (especially before she found out in some harmful way) I wanted some doorway to start that conversation with her.
