"In 1972, the young philosopher Peter Singer published ""Famine, Affluence and Morality,"" which rapidly became one of the most widely discussed essays in applied ethics. Peter Singer is a renowned philosopher, professor, and author. In 2005 Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute ranked him third among global thought leaders for 2013. Peter has written, coauthored, edited, or coedited more than forty books, including Practical Ethics, The Expanding Circle, Rethinking Life and Death, The Ethics of What We Eat (with Jim Mason), and The Most Good You Can Do. His works have appeared in more than twenty-five languages. Peter was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1946, and educated at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford. After teaching in England, the United States, and Australia, he has, since 1999, been Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University. Since 2005 he has combined that position with the position of Laureate Professor at the University of Melbourne, in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies. Grant Cartwright is an award-winning actor who has performed extensively in Australia with the Melbourne Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, and many others. Grant has also performed with the Manhattan Repertory Theatre and the 45th Street Theater. He frequently lends his voice to many international film productions for English Language dubbing, and also appeared in the HBO miniseries The Pacific. Bill Gates is a technologist, business leader, and philanthropist. In 1975, he cofounded Microsoft with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Today, he is cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he has spent more than twenty years working on global health and development issues, including pandemic prevention, disease eradication, and problems concerning water, sanitation, and hygiene. He has three children. Melinda Gates, cochair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest private foundation in the world, has dedicated her life to achieving transformational improvements in the health and prosperity of families, communities, and societies. Core to her work is empowering women and girls to help them realize their full potential. In 2015, Melinda created Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company that enables her to bring together other new and emerging strands of her advocacy and philanthropic work focused in the US. Melinda received a bachelor's degree from Duke and an MBA from Duke's Fuqua School. After joining Microsoft Corp. in 1987, she helped develop many of the company's multimedia products.
