Overview

To the casual onlooker or the regular user, the railway business usually appears organised and relatively uneventful, but it is a very different story for those whose job it is to make it happen. The operation of heavy equipment at speed, 24 hours a day, across the full length of the country and using highly technical signalling, track and mechanical engineering has always produced a constant stream of challenges. Fortunately the highly professional railway staff have always seen such dramas as derailments, strikes, storms and floods, infestation, shooting films on site and even transporting lion cubs as all just part of a day's work, and here ex-railwayman Geoff Body and his son Ian, also a railwayman, have collected 60 entertaining stories that reveal how very unexpected daily life working on the railways could be! AUTHOR: Geoff Body worked in the railway industry from 1945 to 1976 and has been writing on railways ever since. His books include 'Railway Oddities', 'The Galloping Sausage' and 'Signal Box Coming Up, Sir!' for The History Press. Ian Body is Geoff's son and also an ex-railwayman. He has joined forces with his father to produce his latest books. SELLING POINTS: . New material from many ex- railway workers collated by an experienced railwayman and his railwayman son . Revealing the unexpected occurrences that made up life on the railways Includes derailments, strikes, storms, pigeon shooting, and much more . Also includes memories of being behind the scenes shooting on site for filmmakers and advertisers, and the surprising dangers posed by bunny rabbits! 35 b/w illustrations
