Overview

This collection of essays recounts the fall of some of the most famous, infamous, and under-appreciated commanders from both north and south. It is designed to shed new light and insight on some of the most significant casualties of the war. Some, like Abraham Lincoln, Stonewall Jackson and John Reynolds, have become legendary. Others, like Earl Van Dorn, have become infamous. Some, like Albert Sidney Johnston, James McPherson, and Elmer Ellsworth, have left more questions than answers about unfulfilled potential and lost opportunities. Many - too many - have faded into obscurity. The Civil War took as many as 720,000 lives - among them, some of the best and brightest military leaders on both sides, from army commanders to beloved regimental commanders. A writing professor in the Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, NY, Chris is also historian-in-residence at Stevenson Ridge, a historic property on the Spotsylvania battlefield in central Virginia. Chris Mackowski, Ph.D., is the editor in chief and a co-founder of Emerging Civil War, and he’s the managing editor of the Emerging Civil War Series published by Savas Beatie. Chris is a writing professor in the Jandoli School of Communication at St. Bonaventure University, where he also serves as the associate dean for undergraduate programs, and is the historian-in-residence at Stevenson Ridge, a historic property on the Spotsylvania Court House battlefield.
