OverviewHow can the Black church respond faithfully and effectively to intimate partner violence? This book explores that critical question through a culturally grounded quality improvement study of Blessings and Grace Church, a Black faith-based institution located in an urban community in southern Texas. Centering the lived realities of survivors, clergy, and congregants, this work examines the cultural, theological, and structural barriers that hinder effective responses to intimate partner violence (IPV) within Black churches-and offers actionable pathways forward. Guided by Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, the study situates IPV within a multi-layered framework of individual, relational, institutional, and societal influences. Within this framework, the Black church emerges as a powerful spiritual and social institution-one capable of shaping beliefs, behaviors, and access to support, yet often constrained by deeply rooted traditions, scriptural interpretations, and limited training in trauma-informed care. Using qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and non-participating observations, the study captures rich insights into how religious doctrine, cultural norms, and church practices influence responses to IPV. Through thematic analysis, key patterns emerge related to clergy preparedness, survivor disclosure, safety planning, and collaboration with external service providers. These findings reveal both the strengths and the gaps within faith-based responses to violence. More than an analysis, this book offers context-specific, culturally responsive strategies to strengthen survivor support while preserving theological integrity. Readers will find recommendations for clergy training, trauma-informed pastoral care, safety-focused church policies, and interdisciplinary partnerships with social workers, healthcare professionals, and domestic violence advocacy organizations. These collaborative models empower faith leaders to respond to IPV with compassion, accountability, and competence. Designed for clergy, faith leaders, social workers, counselors, researchers, and students, this book contributes to the growing conversation on violence prevention and survivor advocacy within marginalized communities. It affirms the Black church's potential to serve as a transformative space for healing, justice, and empowerment-where faith and action work together to protect and uplift those affected by intimate partner violence. Whether used for ministry development, academic study, or community advocacy, this book provides a vital resource for anyone committed to culturally competent, trauma-informed, and faith-centered approaches to IPV response.
